Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?
As a person who lives with a disability, I know somewhat how life changing it can be. We, as a society, must understand that people with “limited abilities” can still contribute to society. We, as a society, need to accommodate as much as possible everyone. I recently had a discussion with a fellow who is probably the best volunteer in our community. He lives everyday with his “limited ability” but he goes to work and adds to the fabric of our community.
Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?
It is hard to pick just one of the Priority issues, but if I had to, I would pick BASIC NEEDS as this is what everything else flow from. We need to ensure that everyone’s basic needs are met. I am also a strong advocate for employment. I believe that everyone has a role to play in society and can contribute to the “common good”.
Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?
I would suggest a lack of understanding accounts for the high percentage of complaints to the Commission. Society needs to understand that even though we are not alike, we all can contribute in our own way. Employers are no different from society as a whole. When given a chance, people with disabilities can be amazing!
