New Democratic Party of Manitoba (NDP) - Candidate: Ron Kostyshyn

Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?

Being a municipal representative, and a former MLA for the community of Winnipegosis, I have had many a great conversation with a well-loved and respected community member and advocate for accessibility. Those conversations have helped guide me in my growth and understanding of the obstacles that impact so many with disabilities. As a result, I regularly call for improvements to our building codes and public infrastructure.

Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?

Accessibility. My good friend Alex has ensured I understand, that step one is an open door. First, the workplace or service provider must be accessed by all. Bringing down the physical barriers is step one.

Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?

That is a shock, and I don't understand why that is. That said, Government needs to take action to combat stigma, to come at it from every angle and provide solutions so people can live with dignity whether that’s at school, at work, or anywhere else. We need to work with the community to implement and enforce the Accessibility for Manitobans Act, supporting education and awareness campaigns, and properly funding disability supports – including raising wages for disability workers.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba (PC) - Candidate: Gordon Wood

Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?

As an educator for 26 years, I have had both indirect and direct involvement in supporting students with disabilities. Advocating for services and resources was a common narrative while working in school settings. I also have first hand experience with family members and friends coping with disabilities.

Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?

Employment. Currently we are struggling through a work force shortage in our region. We need to be able to engage any and all Manitobans with valuable skills regardless of their limitations. Advocating for this where I see an MLA supporting.

A lack of understanding and education are the main causes of discrimination. Finding ways to educate the public and support those with disabilities in finding places in society where they can be successful and share their skills.
