Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?
I believe that disabilities play a role in all of our lives. We all know a Manitoban with a disability. In my life, my sister has autism and several learning disabilities. She also has significant difficulties with her speech. This has had a major impact in her life and all of our lives. Growing up with her, I was shaped by seeing the world through her eyes and many of my views about how important Disability awareness is comes directly from that experience.
Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?
For me it is "Services and Resources." My sister was not properly diagnosed with her disabilities for years. She also needed significant support to get through public schooling. There has to be more support in our educational system for Manitobans for disabilities.
Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?
I think one of the main issues that we have to tackle as a society is stigma. This is why awareness and education efforts are so crucial for fighting disability discrimination. Manitobans with disabilities should be able to live fulfilling lives and participate in all aspects of society, but we have to work together to remove barriers like discrimination. We should work with communities to fully realize the Accessibility for Manitobans Act - which includes educational components as well as properly funding support systems for Manitobans with disabilities and addressing wage issues. We should also listen to the voices of people of disabilities and ensure that they are making some of these decisions with communities and government.
