Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?

I have known people with physical and mental disabilities since I was young and I know the parents and siblings of such people. Understanding the barriers that exist for those living with disabilities is important for creating empathy and also make us appreciate things that can be otherwise taken for granted. Many people living with disabilities have exemplified to me how to overcome barriers with courage and positivity and are role models for our society. I remember when I met, interviewed and published articles about two great people from B.C. a few years back who became physically challenged later in their lives. After having met with them, it made me think about how positive and passionate one must be to achieve their goals. I respect and fight for the rights of people with disabilities.

Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?

Investing in skilled work force is of great interest to me because I believe disability support workers should get the wages and respect that they deserve. As a province we can and must do better.

Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?

I think we need better representation from people with disabilities in all walks of life. Having more people with disabilities sitting around the decision-making table in our government and in private organizations would make a positive difference in the lives of people facing barriers due to disabilities.

The Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba (PC) Candidate: Nav Brar

Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?

My personal struggle with anxiety, alongside supporting a close family member with disabilities, has deepened my empathy. These experiences reveal the shared vulnerability of hidden challenges and foster compassion for others facing similar situations. Stigmatization and stereotypes are challenged, and I constantly work on my communication skills and patience. It is important to me that people are treated in a dignified manner.

Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?

The top priority issue for myself is meeting basic needs, with a focus on providing dignified support to Manitobans living with severe and prolonged disabilities. In response to DMVote's advocacy in 2019, the PC team introduced the Manitoba Supports for Persons with Disabilities program, aimed at offering improved disability income support.

While there is still work to be done, the enhancements made to benefits in recent years represent positive steps in the right direction. These efforts signify a commitment to addressing the essential needs of individuals with disabilities, ensuring they receive the support and dignity they deserve.

By recognizing the importance of meeting basic needs and responding to advocacy from organizations like DMVote, the PC team and I are contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society in Manitoba. This approach reflects a dedication to improving the lives of those with disabilities, a goal that benefits not only the individuals themselves but the entire community.

Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?

Public awareness plays a crucial role in combatting disability discrimination, often stemming from a lack of understanding and misconceptions. Government initiatives, such as public awareness campaigns, can be instrumental in addressing this issue. In the context of a re-elected PC government, launching a campaign that highlights the benefits of hiring persons with disabilities is a positive step.

Such a campaign can help dispel myths and stereotypes, emphasizing the skills, talents, and contributions of disabled individuals in the workforce. It can encourage employers to embrace diversity and inclusivity, ultimately leading to a more equitable job market.

By taking proactive measures to raise awareness about disability issues, a re-elected PC government would demonstrate its commitment to fostering a more inclusive and accessible society. This effort aligns with the broader goal of reducing discrimination, promoting equal opportunities, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
