Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?

My father has severe hearing loss, it was a very tough adjustment for our family, him most of all. We’re a tight-knit family, so we worked on it as a team and we’ve all gotten much better at communicating and making sure dad stays included.

Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?

They’re all important, but the priority I’m most excited about is unleashing employment potential of Manitobans with disabilities. As a teacher, it’s so rewarding for me to help my students with disabilities overcome barriers. I love to see former students reach their full potential in life and find a calling that they love. As a small business owner, I want Manitoba’s economy to be bustling and growing. With 40% of Manitobans with disabilities who are in their prime working ages unemployed, we need to do better.

Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?

Manitobans with disabilities deserve to fully participate in all aspects of our communities and fully enjoy life, it’s a basic human right. Too often, systemic barriers, stigma, and discrimination get in the way. Everyone shares the responsibility to remove barriers and oppose stigma and discrimination whenever and wherever it comes up. I plan to do everything I can to make sure and make sure everyone can live with dignity and live the life they want to live. An NDP Government will get to work on properly implementing and enforcing the Accessibility for Manitobans Act to remove systemic barriers. We’ll improve education and awareness to reduce stigma, and properly fund supports for people with disabilities – including higher wages for disability workers.

It's important for people with disabilities to be included at the table when decisions are being made, and we’ll make sure that lines of communication are open, and proper consultation and inclusion happens continuously.
