Q: How have disabilities played a role in your life and the lives of your loved ones?

Our family has witnessed the benefits of organizations like Manitoba Possible, in breaking down hurdles for children and adults to live a fulfilling life. I recognize the importance of these programs that not only expand awareness, but provide the much needed services for all ages across our communities.

Q: Which one of DMVote’s 5 priority issues is of the greatest interest to you and why?

The DMVote top priority issue – Basic Needs – is of greatest interest to myself and our PC Party. Manitobans living with disabilities deserve dignified support. After DMVote advocacy called for the support of basic needs in 2019, our PC team delivered Manitoba supports for Persons with Disabilities, a new disability income support program. There’s more to do, but enhancements we made to benefits in recent years are steps in the right direction. It is both important and urgent to get it right, so a re-elected PC Government would conduct a review of the newly launched program and involve community members.

Q: Disability discrimination has made up the largest share by far of all the formal complaints lodged with the Manitoba Human Rights Commission over the last 20 years. What do you think accounts for this and what do you think needs to be done to address it?

A lack of awareness of disability issues may be behind disability discrimination. Government has an important role to play in fighting back against discrimination, and we have an opportunity to partner with organizations through public awareness campaigns, for example, where we can highlight important initiatives like employment and the hiring of persons with disabilities. A re-elected PC Government is committed to undertaking such a campaign.
