New Democratic Party Candidate - Kathleen McCallum

Answer 1. No one in my immediate family has been affected by issues relating to a disability, but I have friends of all abilities who have faced barriers to live a full and independent life.

Answer 2. The greatest disability challenges in Steinbach are not so different from other communities in the province. We are committed to implementing the Accessibility for Manitobans Act, which the NDP government was proud to introduce. We can begin with accessible public buildings and promoting and celebrating the equality of people of all abilities. We are also committed to moving forward with an assured income, which will help remove financial stress from more people living with disabilities.

Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba Candidate - Kelvin Goertzen

Answer 1. Like many Manitobans, I have family members who live with disabilities. However, the greatest impact has been several friends I have who who have been life long advocates for their children who are living with disabilities. I've learned a great deal from them and been inspired by their desire to see positive societal change but especially their desire as parents to ensure their children have fulfilling lives in our communities through independent living.

Answer 2. We have had a specific challenge of accessibility at our regional hospital which I have been advocating for change to over the past several years. I believe we are on the road to a proper remedy which will make it properly accessible to everyone by the end of this year. Another challenge is that, as a growing community, there are needs for new infrastructure but also a need to ensure that older infrastructure becomes accessible to proper standards.
